William Billy Ryan, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England 1928 - 2021

The death has taken place in Stroud, England of Billy Ryan formerly of Thomastown and Johnstownbridge GAA.

Billy’s death brings an end to one of the great moments in our club history as Billy was the last surviving member of our team that won the Kildare 1950 Junior Championship.

Billy was the youngest of three Ryan brothers who played in that final and made a huge contribution in bringing the club our first championship success.

Billy played minor when he was just 14 years of age as the club tried to form a minor team. One of Billy’s great memories in the Johnstownbridge shirt was in 1949 and a four game epic encounter with Staplestown in which the Ryan brothers lined out at 8, 9 and 10 on the team.

Billy is survived by daughter Carmel, son Willie, granddaughter Emma, nephews, nieces and a wide circle of friends.

Billy Ryan’s funeral mass will take place on Tuesday 30 November in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Stroud at 11am.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
